a publication of the students of Archbishop Moeller High School
SQUIRE is Archbishop Moeller High School’s literary journal. It’s been a few years since we’ve published a hardcopy version of SQUIRE, but in May 2012, we returned to producing an annual hardcopy journal to showcase the finest creative work from Moeller students.
What is a Literary Journal?
A “literary journal” is a publication, much like a magazine, that features student writing: poetry, fiction, creative
nonfiction (personal narrative, travelogue, history, etc.), excerpts of novels, plays, and film scripts as well as visual art. Submissions will be open to all Moeller students. Squire staff members (students) make up the editorial board that selects what gets published.

Submission Guidelines

SQUIRE welcomes submissions of previously unpublished poems, short stories, one-act plays, and creative non-fiction. We also accept submissions of artwork including cover art. Our reading period extends from December 15 to March 15. All submissions for consideration should be emailed to Mr. Rose, SQUIRE’s faculty moderator as an attachment: DOC files for all written work; PDF files for all artwork. All submissions will be read by the SQUIRE editorial staff (see below).
Fiction Guidelines
Submit only one story at a time. We have no set maximum for length, but stories under 4,000 words have the best chance of publication. We generally avoid novel excerpts unless they can stand alone as stories. SQUIRE does not otherwise have any specific guidelines for style, genre, or subject matter. All short fiction submitted for publication in SQUIRE must be typewritten, double-spaced, and include a title.
Poetry Guidelines
Submit no more than five poems at a time. Poetry selections are made by a widely-read group with eclectic tastes who look for the best poems, regardless of form or subject matter. Poetry submitted for publication in SQUIRE must be typewritten, double-spaced, and include a title.
Creative Non-Fiction Guidelines
Submit only one work at a time. We welcome submissions in personal narrative, memoir, travelogue, literary journalism, and experimental nonfiction. We prefer submissions shorter than 4,000 words. Creative nonfiction
submitted for publication in SQUIRE must be typewritten, double-spaced, and include a title.
One Act Plays & Film-script Guidelines
Submit only one work at a time. We welcome submissions of one-act plays and short film scripts. We prefer submissions shorter than 4,000 words. One-act plays and film scripts submitted for publication in SQUIRE must be typewritten, double-spaced, and include a title.
Artwork Guidelines
You may submit digital art, photography, paintings, drawings, mixed media, graphic design, industrial design, etc. All submissions will be considered for cover art and interior publication. Artwork submitted for publication must be in PDF format (if accepted for publication we’ll require a JPG file)
We encourage all writers to join us for the Creative Writing Club. If interested please contact Mr. Rose.
